By the age of 5 my grandmother had me making a few hand stitches on a quilt she had stretched out on a frame in her basement. I only have flashes of memories from these early years, all lovely, all happy and all treasured.
At eleven I completed my very first quilted project, a log cabin pillow case, it sits proudly on an old chair in my sewing room. With the start of a funky fabric underwater scene in my 20s, still not completed, a new passion began to grow.
Now it has taken over my life, I have a quilt business I run part-time, teach and live in what I affectionately call a padded house. I can go crazy and they don’t have to take me anywhere, I already live within padded walls! In the midst of all this quilting, looking after my daughter, loving my husband and petting my 3 dogs I have found a spare 5 minutes and decided to teach myself to knit. I feel a new passion brewing.
Admittedly I have been known to make a few straight knit scarves but decided to make myself some earthy, variegated bamboo/wool blend socks. Having not even completed the first sock, I have started a sweater for my daughter Ellen. Visions of a head band, neck warmer and fingerless gloves are swimming in my head along with some summer dress ideas for Ellen.
Someone once told me that when you complete a project you can look upon it and see your life as it was when you made the stitches. It is so true, I walk down a little memory lane with each quilt, even with the quilts I have received, a little hug from someone I love.
So this is my life, one stitch at a time.
